Biodynamical spirit at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

By Julie Carpentier

Julie Carpentier’s past is deeply rooted to the Loire valley. She has shown a remarkable understanding of native varietals together with an overall taste for exceptional and unique products…

Precision, patience and possibly above all, humility…

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – or DRC as often referred – has reached the ultimate status for many wine lovers. As from the mid-1980s, the estate has partly been run along biodynamic principles, in order to “be as close to the vineyard as possible, and for the vines to be most in harmony with nature” according to Aubert de Villaine. In 2007, the entire domaine was converted to biodynamical cultivation.

Biodynamic cultivation was first detailed in a series of agriculture lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s. It is now internationally recognized as a leading organic method of agriculture and its principles are subscribed by many prominent wines-estates over the world.

On Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's official website, the spirit of this holistic approach to organic agriculture is commented as follows:

Respect for the soil and a keen awareness of a precious but fragile patrimony of natural conditions the balance of which alone can express this gift. A “climat” is a living thing bound to an extraordinarily precise dynamic which you must respect and preserve in a spirit of profound humility. The selection and propagation of Pinot Noir “très fin” inherited from the old Romanée-Conti vineyard, an incomparable genetic legacy whose finesse and complexity determine the purity of the wines produced. The quality of the team of men and women to whom have been entrusted the work and whose key words are: thoroughness, attention to detail, control of the practices, precision, patience and possibly above all, humility.
